Greetings!
Our fast and fun week ended with a super hot Field Day. Everyone had a blast!
In class we finished our first week of reading logs. A video with instructions is here (see UNSLUMPING). In short, the kids need to read at least three books or chapters a week and respond to one question listed in the log. You initial the work and I will provide individual feedback on Fridays. Remember that 3rd graders should not do more than 30 total minutes of homework.
The reading log will take about 15 minutes a session, especially if your child uses RAZ-Kids. There will be make up opportunities in class so, if RAZ-Kids is not preferred or available, we will manage. But, to build momentum for summer, the reading really needs to be at home.
Here is some data that supports this idea of a summer slump in reading and math skills. Let’s try to build reading momentum to carry the kids through the lazy days of summer. The kids are keen on trying reading logs, but each will need your support.
Our annual Science Fair is May 6. You are invited to come view the exhibition from 11 a.m. on.
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Enjoy the week’s photos that include Earth Day snaps and a virtual roller coaster ride. We read about roller coasters and the "momentum" needed to make them go.
Stay cool,
Mr. Johnson
