Greetings!

Monday’s Day of Service (January 18) honors Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday. The event coincides with our start of a persuasive writing unit. Therefore, this week included an examination of Dr. King’s I have a dream speech. In addition to showcasing incredible figures of speech, our hearing, watching and reading of I have a dream gave the kids a quick writing model. A few samples are included below.

In science, we took quizzes on our water chapters and used some science time to gather natural materials for Monday’s Day of Service. DOS volunteers will create room signs with various items (e.g. seeds, tiny leaves, flower pedals) found on or around campus. I think you’ll like them.

If your child is joining the DOS walk-a-thon, please have him or her bring a hat, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a water bottle. Donation money for walking does not need to be sent in until after the event. I will relay more information on this soon.

One of my favorite things this week was attempting to explain the influence of non-violent resistance in the US Civil Rights Movement, as an explanation was necessary. I included a picture we discussed to illustrate the concept. If I engaged the kids well enough, now your child (with the drawing) can begin to explain the effectiveness of a peaceful protest.

Feel good and enjoy your weekend!

Mr. J
